What is forehead reduction surgery?

Forehead reduction surgery, also known as hairline lowering, is a cosmetic procedure we perform at Dr. Ducu Clinics to lower the hairline and reduce the size of the forehead. This surgical technique is often sought by people with a high or disproportionately large forehead who desire a more balanced and proportionate facial appearance.

Forehead reduction surgery can help enhance facial harmony, improve self-confidence, and achieve the desired facial proportions for people seeking a more youthful or feminine/masculine appearance.

How does hairline lowering work?

At Dr. Ducu Clinics we use the FUE method for the hairline lowering procedure. Hairline lowering surgery using this advanced method involves the precise extraction of individual hair follicles from the back or sides of the scalp, known as the donor area. These follicles are then meticulously transplanted to the front hairline to lower and reshape it, creating a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Hairline lowering using the FUE method is offering a non-invasive solution to disproportionate forehead appearance.

What causes an excessively high hairline?

An excessively high hairline can be caused by a variety of factors, often leading people to seek forehead reduction surgery as a solution.

This procedure is popular among those looking to create a more balanced facial appearance and lower their hairline.

These factors often drive many people to choose forehead reduction surgery to achieve a more proportionate and youthful appearance.

Do you also struggle with one of these conditions? Book a consultation to discuss how hairline lowering surgery can help you!

Here are some causes of an excessively high hairline:

  • Genetics – A naturally high hairline can be inherited and present from birth.
  • Hair loss – Conditions like androgenetic alopecia can cause hairline recession over time.
  • Hormonal changes – Hormonal imbalances or changes, such as those during menopause or thyroid issues, can lead to hairline recession.
  • Previous surgeries or trauma – Scarring from previous surgeries or physical trauma can result in an unnaturally high hairline.
  • Ageing – As we age, the hairline may naturally recede, making the forehead appear larger.

Forehead reduction surgery at Dr. Ducu Clinics London

1. Consultation

The first step on your hair restoration process in the initial appointment you will have with your plastic surgeon. During this consultation, the surgeon evaluates your hairline, discusses your Cosmetic & Medical goals and expectations, and assesses if you are a good fit for the procedure. The surgeon takes into account factors such as hair loss pattern, scalp laxity, and overall facial proportions to develop a customised treatment plan tailored to your needs.

2. FUE hairline lowering

Before having the procedure, we will administer local anaesthesia to ensure comfort throughout the process. Using the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method, the surgeon will harvest individual hair follicles from the donor area, located at the back or sides of the scalp. Thid is done using a specialised surgical tool known as a micro punch. These devices are extremely small, ranging from 0.6mm to 1.0mm in diameter, allowing the surgeon to precisely extract individual follicular units containing 1-4 hairs each, minimising trauma to the surrounding tissues.

These follicles are then carefully transplanted to the frontal hairline to lower and reshape it, following the pre-determined design established during the consultation. The entire procedure is performed with meticulous attention to detail to achieve natural-looking results and minimal scarring.

3. Aftercare & recovery

Following the surgery, you will receive detailed post-operative instructions. These may include guidelines for washing the scalp, avoiding strenuous activities, and taking prescribed medications to aid in healing and prevent infection. You will need to keep the treated area clean and protected, and avoid certain hair styling products or activities that could disrupt the healing process. We will also schedule regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress and address any concerns during the recovery period.

4. Results

In the months following the procedure, you will experience gradual hair growth as the transplanted follicles take root and begin to produce new hair. While initial results may be visible within a few months, full results typically become apparent after approximately 9-12 months, once the hair has fully grown and matured. You can expect a lower and more balanced hairline that enhances your facial Cosmetic & Medical and improves overall self-confidence. The results are long-lasting and natural.

Hairline Advancement VS Hair Transplant for forehead reduction surgery in London

Hairline Advancement and Hair Transplant are both procedures designed to address a high or receding hairline, but they differ significantly in their methods, outcomes, and suitability for different individuals. However, FUE Hair Transplant offers several advantages that make it an appealing choice.

Procedure:

Hairline Advancement - Involves surgically moving the scalp forward by making an incision along the hairline and repositioning it, which lowers the hairline immediately.

FUE Hair Transplant - This minimally invasive procedure transplants individual hair follicles from a donor area to the hairline, gradually lowering it and adding density over time.

Results:

Hairline Advancement - Provides immediate, visible results with a significantly lower hairline post-surgery.

FUE Hair Transplant - Offers natural-looking results that develop as the transplanted hair grows over several months, blending seamlessly with existing hair.

Recovery:

Hairline Advancement - Requires about 1-2 weeks of recovery, with potential swelling and bruising around the forehead.

FUE Hair Transplant - Has a shorter recovery time with minimal discomfort; most patients experience only mild redness or swelling that resolves within a few days.

Suitability:

Hairline Advancement - Best for individuals with a naturally high hairline and no significant hair loss, with good scalp elasticity.

FUE Hair Transplant - Ideal for those with a receding or thinning hairline - offering a flexible solution that can be tailored to individual needs and preferences, with the added benefit of addressing hair loss.

Here are some of the reasons many of our patients have chosen this procedure:

Natural-looking results - The FUE method allows us to create a hairline that looks and feels natural. This new harmonious hairline will complement your facial features.

Minimal scarring - Unlike traditional hair transplant techniques that require a linear donor scar, the FUE method involves harvesting individual follicular units using tiny circular incisions. This approach promotes faster healing and minimal scarring.

Customised treatment - The FUE method allows us to tailor the procedure to to your unique needs and Cosmetic & Medical goals. We can create a subtle refinement or a more dramatic transformation.

Why have the hairline lowering procedure using the FUE method?

The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method for hairline lowering is highly advanced, offering precise and minimally invasive follicle extraction techniques.

Hairline lowering London - Frequently asked questions

Ideal candidates for hairline lowering include individuals who have a hgh or receding hairline and seek to lower it to achieve a more balanced facial appearance. Also, they should have adequate donor hair available in the back or sides of the scalp to facilitate the transplantation process. This ensures that there are enough follicles to create a natural-looking hairline without compromising the donor area’s aesthetics.

Forehead reduction surgery using the FUE method is safe when performed by a skilled and experienced hair restoration surgeon. The FUE technique is minimally invasive and does not require a linear donor incision. Thus, it minimises the risk of complications such as scarring, infection, and excessive bleeding.

Hairline lowering surgery (the FUE method) results in minimal scarring compared to traditional hair transplant techniques. With FUE, individual hair follicles are extracted using small circular incisions, usually less than 1mm in diameter, which heal quickly and leave tiny dot-like scars that are barely noticeable. You will not have scars on your forehead.

The results of hairline lowering are long-lasting and can be enjoyed for many years. Once the transplanted hair follicles have fully taken root and begun to grow, typically within several months after the procedure, the new hairline is considered stable and should remain in place. While natural hair thinning may continue to occur over time due to factors such as aging or genetic predisposition, the transplanted hair follicles are typically resistant to further hair loss. For many of our patients, this is a permanent solution.

Hairline lowering surgery using the FUE method typically lasts between 4 to 6 hours, depending on various factors such as the extent of the hairline lowering required, the number of follicles to be transplanted, and the individual patient’s anatomy.

You will have to wait at least 24 to 48 hours before gently washing your hair or scalp. When you do wash your hair, it’s crucial to use a mild, non-abrasive shampoo and to be very gentle to avoid disturbing the newly transplanted follicles or causing irritation to the scalp. You will receive more reccommendations.

After hairline lowering surgery you should avoid strenuous exercise, direct sunlight exposure, swimming, smoking, and traumatic handling of the scalp. Tight-fitting hats, headbands, or other accessories can put pressure on the surgical area and interfere with proper healing. You should opt for loose-fitting headwear. Also, sleeping on the stomach or sides can put pressure on the surgical area and potentially displace the transplanted follicles. You should try to sleep on your back with your head elevated to promote optimal healing.

You can expect to take about 1 to 2 weeks off from work to allow for initial recovery and to minimise physical exertion. However, for jobs that involve strenuous physical activity or prolonged periods of standing, additional time off may be necessary.

No. Forehead reduction surgery involves minimal discomfort during the procedure due to the administration of local anaesthesia.
