Are breast implants safe?

Many women have concerns about the safety of breast implants, often due to misconceptions or outdated information about complications. Common worries include implant rupture, capsular contracture, and potential health risks, but advancements in medical technology have made modern implants safer than ever.

Today’s implants are rigorously tested, made from high-quality, medical-grade materials, and designed to be durable and long-lasting. Additionally, breast augmentation is one of the most studied cosmetic procedures, with extensive research confirming its safety when performed by qualified surgeons. In the UK, breast implants are regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), ensuring they meet strict safety and quality standards. At our clinic, we use only the safest, MHRA-approved implants and follow the most advanced surgical techniques to minimise risks and provide natural, beautiful results, giving you complete peace of mind.

Breast augmentation procedure at Dr. Ducu Clinics London

1. Consultation

You will have a comprehensive consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon at Dr. Ducu Clinics. During this initial appointment, the surgeon will carefully assess your medical history, discuss your Cosmetic & Medical goals and expectations, and perform a physical examination to evaluate your breast anatomy, skin elasticity, and overall health. This is when you can ask questions, express any concerns, and collaborate with the surgeon to develop a personalised surgery plan.

2. Procedure

Depending on the surgical technique and anaesthesia chosen (local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia), you may be given medications to help you relax or put to sleep. The surgeon will then make the necessary incisions, typically in locations such as the crease underneath the breast (inframammary fold), around the areola, or in the armpit (transaxillary). These incision are typically 3 to 5cm long. Through these incisions, the breast implants will be carefully inserted into the breast pocket, either beneath the breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath the chest muscle (submuscular). Once the implants are positioned correctly and the desired breast size and shape are achieved, the incisions are meticulously closed using sutures or surgical tape.

3. Aftercare & recovery

After the procedure, you’ll be moved to a recovery area, where you’ll be monitored closely by the surgical team. You may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the chest area, which can be managed with prescribed pain medications and cold compresses. Depending on the surgical technique used and your overall health, you may be able to return home the same day or stay overnight for observation. It’s essential to follow post-operative instructions carefully, including wearing a supportive surgical bra or avoiding strenuous activities and heavy lifting.

4. Results

The full results become visible in the weeks and months following breast augmentation surgery. This is when swelling subsides, and the breasts settle into their new position. While some initial swelling and asymmetry are normal, you’ll notice an immediate improvement in breast size and contour. Over time, as the tissues heal and the implants settle, your breasts will feel softer, more natural, and more proportionate to your body.

Ideal candidates for breast enlargement may also include women who have experienced changes in breast size or shape due to factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging, and wish to restore lost volume and achieve a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

Breast implants are safe medical devices. Both saline and silicone gel implants have undergone extensive testing and research to ensure their safety and efficacy. However, like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation carries potential risks and complications, but these are minimal when performed by qualified plastic surgeons.

Women with sagging breasts can also receive breast implants. Depending on how much the breast sags, an additional surgery may also be necessary. For breasts with nipples that droop below the lower crease of the breast, breast lift surgery or mastopexy, is often required as well. This surgery will also add scars all the way around the nipple-areola unlike most breast augmentation surgeries. Without this additional surgery to remove excess skin, placement of the implant may not adequately correct the sagging.

This is often one of the most difficult decisions, and for many reasons, has the most potential for disappointment. During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will work with you to identify what size of breast you desire from augmentation, but the decision always lays to the patients. The surgeon might make some suggestions.

Yes. Placement of the implant below the breast tissue, as in sub glandular placement, does not affect the ability of the breast to produce milk. Similarly, submuscular placement, or implant placement below one of the chest muscles preserves proper breast functioning. With the peri-areolar incision, an increased risk of breast-feeding problems may exist. In one study, 7/8 patients reported problems with breast-feeding following peri-areolar breast augmentation surgery. For women who choose the infra-mammary or trans-axillary incision, (incisions under the breast and through the armpit), breastfeeding is usually not a problem. Be sure to discuss your breast-feeding needs with your surgeon during your consultation.

Breast implants are not lifetime devices, but many women enjoy their benefits for a decade or more without issues. However, it’s essential to note that breast implants are not permanent and may eventually require replacement or removal due to factors such as implant rupture, capsular contracture, changes in breast appearance over time, or personal preference.

After breast augmentation surgery, it’s advised to avoid sleeping on your side for the first few weeks to allow for proper healing and to minimise pressure on the breasts. Sleeping on your back with your upper body elevated using pillows can help reduce swelling and discomfort, promote optimal blood circulation, and support the healing process.

This depends on your job and its physical demands. Some general guidelines are: upper arm movements, like reaching, should be avoided for the first 1-2 weeks. Lifting anything heavier than 5 pounds should be avoided for 6 weeks after the operation. This lifting restriction may prevent some women from returning to work.

Breast augmentation is performed under anaesthesia to minimise discomfort during the procedure. However, some discomfort, soreness, and tightness in the chest area are common after surgery. Pain levels are typically managable with prescribed pain medications and may vary from mild to moderate in the days following surgery.

Breast implants used in augmentation surgery come in two forms: round and anatomical (also known as teardrop-shaped). Round implants are symmetrical and typically provide fullness in both the upper and lower portions of the breast, offering a more rounded appearance. Anatomical implants, on the other hand, mimic the natural shape of the breast, with more fullness in the lower portion and a tapered, teardrop shape. We use silicone implants, due to their more natural feel and appearance, than the saline ones. Silicone implants are filled with a cohesive silicone gel that closely resembles the consistency of natural breast tissue, providing a softer and more realistic result.
